Simmons’ Way Village Inn: About Us

Simmons' Way was named in honor of Edward W. Simmons, a prominent businessman, educator, statesman and lawyer who built the original manse in 1854 upon his engagement to Abigail Winchell, daughter of a prominent local family. Born of Dutch heritage in Dutchess County, NY, Simmons became the first merchant in the village when he built the general store next to the railway station in 1851.
On May 2, 1887, Baseball Hall of Fame member Eddie (Cocky) Collins was born in what is now the Collins Room. Collins had a long, successful career from 1906 to 1930, highlighted by his brilliant base running and batting which helped four teams win the World Series. He is even more celebrated for his refusal to go along with eight of his White Sox teammates in the 1919 World Series to throw the series to the Boston Red Sox.
Simmons’ modest home was transformed into an elegant Victorian residence in 1892 by Edward H. Thompson, then president of Millerton National Bank. From 1903 to 1983, the house served as doctors' offices and residences.
The purchase of the property by Carol and Robert Sadlon in 1984 began a second series of renovations which transformed the private home into an elegant, charming and comfortable inn. National renown soon followed with a cover photo and lead article in a New York Magazine article, featuring elegant country inns of the Northeast.
Jay and Martha Reynolds became the proud keepers of Simmons’ Way Village Inn with their purchase of the estate in 2003.
